Enough space to accommodate relatives when they visit was a key consideration for this couple in planning their new home , writes Janet Howie.

SPACE to live the life they wish has been a key consideration for a Corowa couple about to settle into their newly built home.

Alan Morris and Carolyn Hayes bought their Cemetery Road property, nearly 65 hectares in total, in 2010 and erected two sheds and introduced sheep on the land before embarking on a house.

Accommodating all the family when they visit was a priority for the couple, who between them have six children and 14 grandchildren.

“We wanted somewhere where we would build the home we want to fit all our children in,” Ms Hayes, who is a nurse, says.

“Being able to be all in the same room, you know, at the same time.”
“We looked around town, but everything was neighbour on top of neighbour … and we both decided we couldn’t live like that.
“We spotted the land, put in for a bid, got it and away we went from there.”

They began talking to Corowa-Rutherglen builder Jamie Cooper, part of the Independent Builders Network, as well as other companies in Albury-Wodonga.
“We ended up with Jamie because he could see our vision, knew what we wanted and the price was right,” Ms Hayes says.
“Another big thing that we like was that if anything went wrong, I’d ring Jamie.

“It was that sort of communication which was really, really good.”
Based on the Leopold design, the home offers about 22 squares of living and an expanded outdoor area that measures 72sq m.

Mr Morris, who works at Uncle Tobys, says they altered Mr Cooper’s original plan to suit their specific needs.
“We told him we want the whole thing squared off so that anything that was outside then would be undercover,” he says.

With three bedrooms, a study, three bathrooms and large living areas, the house can accommodate multiple visitors.

Ms Hayes particularly values the open-plan kitchen, meals and living area that allows dual access to the L-shaped alfresco space.
“From the day I walked in when it was first being put up … I’ve been in love with it and I’m still in love with it,” she says.

The kitchen has a walk-in pantry as well as space for a refrigerator and separate freezer to be placed side by side.

An en suite and a walk-in wardrobe are features of the main bedroom while the other bedrooms and study have built-in wardrobes.
“Any space that was left, we turned into cupboard space,” Ms Hayes says. “You cannot have enough.”

Personal touches add character to the home, such as the kitchen tiles depicting hens, floral tiles in the powder room and the kookaburras singing on the glass of the front door.

Outside, the couple plan to install a barbecue and also a pizza oven.

Mr Cooper says the house needed to be built up owing to low-lying land that was prone to flooding.

Construction began last December and now Mr Morris and Ms Hayes have started moving in.

They say they cannot fault the service provided by Mr Cooper and all his tradespeople and appreciated being able to employ local workers.

“From the plumber to the painter to the electrician to whoever else, they’ve been really, really good,” Ms Hayes says.
